We have people contacting us all the time with questions about how long various types of videos should be. That is why we thought it might be a good idea to whip up an shiny new infographic that explains the average video length of numerous types of productions.
Videos come in all shapes and sizes. Depending on what the aim of the video is determines what type is needed. That in turn decides what kind of running time you are looking for. Take for example the corporate video. Now statistics show that the average video length of a corporate promo is about 3 minutes and 30 seconds long. That is a pretty good bench mark for where you should be looking to keep your video.
Whereas, a pre-roll video (the advertisements that pop up right before you watch a YouTube clip) are a strict 30 seconds long. If your aim is to produce a advertisement that will be feature before each clip, then that means your video length cannot be past 30 seconds. Simple, huh.

As you can see, there are many different types of videos out there. Each with their own average video length. It should be mentioned that these are only statistics. Meaning: You don’t have to specifically aim each type of video at the average running time. However, it does work as a really good bench mark. In the end, it is probably best to first determine who you audience is, and then work backwards from there. This ensures that you select the right kind of video at the right kind of length.
