Music Videos VevoTo continue with our video sharing series, we thought we might mix it up a bit and focus on a platform specifically designed for music videos. Online music videos are still one of the most popular and powerful visual contents on the internet. If you take a look at the most viral videos on a given week, you will see that music videos usually take up more than half of the actual list! They really are that much in demand. So, it was probably with this rationale that a music video sharing platform was created! So, for this episode, we are going to take a look at one of the most popular music video sites: Vevo.

Vevo was officially launched in December 2009. They specifically cater to the music video sharing and hosting. While this is a free service, Vevo are known for hosting videos for the main record labels! The website has been described as Hulu for music videos. A hub of music video sharing that features over 50,000 videos.

The Pro’s And Con’s Of Vevo

Pro’s

1. Its not strictly for music videos sharing!: Vevo also allows for original series, live performances, behind-the-scenes footage, and interviews with artists.

2. Vevo video content is accessible on YouTube.

3. Music video iTunes Sync: Vevo can track the artists that you have in iTunes with the ones that are stored in the their library. This will then allow you to create playlists on the site for your favourite bands.

4. An artist’s followers would have an easier time finding the real music videos on Vevo, as they don’t have to compete with all user uploads.

Con’s

1. Users do not upload videos directly to site. The Vevo Admins are in charge of what content goes up.

2. Not available worldwide. Vevo currently is accessible in US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France,[19] Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Poland, and Brazil.

3. Vevo censors video with inappropriate content as the company relies heavily on advertising revenue.

4. There is no control over the type of ads that appear when people watch your videos.

Music Videos On Vevo

So, all in all, while Vevo is a site specifically designed for music video sharing, there does seem to be some downsides to it. Vevo offers a very professional service for musicians. However, it doesn’t seem to be a site that would cater to an artist or a band who are just starting out.

Vevo’s real strength lies in promoting the musicians who already have a healthy following. So, in the end, whether or not to use this site really depends on how successful the artist already is. For established artists, this is a great forum for sharing your video content. For up-and-comers, YouTube is probably the place to be (for now!).
