We all have CVs. That collection of bullet-pointed experiences and accomplishments that tell the world what we’re all about. For getting jobs, this has been the go-to way for decades now. But what about creating a video resume?
Now bear with me for a second. I know this idea might at first be a little odd. But, it actually makes perfect sense!
Actors have showreels. Films have trailers. So why can’t you make a video that presents your strengths and talents?? Think about it! We all know that video is becoming the main attention-grabbing thing on the web! More people would rather check out a visually interesting video, than reading a load of text! So, why don’t we bring this into the world of job-seeking?
Imagine for a second that you were applying for a job. Now, you could send 2 pieces of meticulously worded paper like every other John and Nancy! But what if you sent in a DVD instead (or a link to a private online video)? I gotta say, that would be pretty original! The odds that someone would press play could be quite high. It would one way to distinguish yourself from the pile of paper on their desk. It would also show for a fact that you can think outside the box. As well as that, it would prove that you are willing to go the extra mile!
Show The Real You
Some people say that a CV can’t quite capture who they are. On paper, your skills and attributes may not exactly stand out. Whereas, in an interview, you might have a fighting chance of getting that job.
This means that a video resume would give you the opportunity to let the employer get a better understanding of what type of person you really are. If they get a better sense of who you are, then that means that your chances of moving forward to the interview stage has been increased!
So What Would A Video Resume Contain Anyway?
Okay, so lets look at what a video resume might actually contain. First off, it could feature a sharp and informative interview of yourself explaining your skills and qualifications. Pretty simple right? We keep it to about 2 minutes or so (after that, it might start to drag). Now, that in itself might be enough to get your point across.
But, for the sake of argument, lets go a bit further. So, you have your interview clip. Then, to keep the package that little more engaging, you add some shots of you performing the duties that you are discussing? It might just help to reinforce your statements of expertise.
Your CV is all about persuasion. Persuading the employer to recognise that you are the right candidate for the role. A video resume would be a perfect tool when it comes to that kind of persuasion.
The Future Of Job Seeking?
This new type of CV doesn’t actually seem to farfetched. With video becoming more and more accessible, the chances of Video Resumes seems a whole lot more plausible. Don’t be surprised to see this trend starting to take shape in the next couple of years. Why not get ahead of the pack, and be one of the first ones to give it a try.
That way, you have the job you wanted before everyone else jumps on the video resume bandwagon!
